Is your car company cool?

Car manufacturers have a direct role to play in saving the lives of dogs this summer. That's why Born Free USA united with Animal Protection Institute will be working with companies across the country to encourage them to back our "My Dog is Cool" campaign — and we need your help. Together we can ensure that the collective power of the auto industry is brought to bear — and we can save dogs from dying.

Nissan is Cool

Our goal is to get all companies to address this important safety issue and spread the word through public education. Car manufacturers nationwide will be asked to take a few simple steps in order to prevent future tragedies. Born Free USA united with API is asking all companies to:

  1. Lend their support to the "My Dog is Cool" campaign, backing our initiative to save dogs this summer. We are working with the media to let the public and our supporters know which companies care so we can reward their support.

  2. Give us a commitment to review Owner's Manuals for forthcoming models and to ensure the inclusion of prominent language alerting owners to the dangers of leaving dogs in hot cars.

  3. Spread the word about the dangers of leaving dogs in a hot car to current and potential owners of their vehicles. This could happen in a variety of ways, for example, information on company websites, articles in company magazines and in house publications, and the production of customer information and safety briefings for distribution via dealerships.

Car companies can take some simple practical steps to make a real difference in reducing the toll of deaths this year. We will keep you updated on our progress and let you know the manufacturers that have signed on and agreed to support the campaign.

How You Can Help Today

Please check your owner's manual (and any other notices or literature that came with your vehicle) and see if you can find a warning about the dangers of leaving animals in your car in warm weather. You may find this information in a safety section or it may be on a different page, with the air conditioning information, for example. Let us know what you find (with details of the warning and the make, model, and year of your vehicle) and we will build a national picture which will help us in our work to lobby car companies to spread the message and save lives!
